Spring, Flower Focus

Flowers in Focus: Hyacinths

It may be cold but spring has definitely arrived here! The shop is full of baskets and planters bursting with hyacinths, daffodils and muscari.... and the smell is incredible!

Origins

Commonly called Hyacinths, these are bulbous flowering plants from a small genus of Hyacinthus. The origins of this name comes from a Greek mythological figure 'Hyakinthos'. It is said that Hyakinthos and Apollo were taking turns throwing a discus. To impress Apollo, he ran to catch it but was struck by the discus as it fell to the ground and died.  Apollo did not allow Hades (God of the Dead and Riches) to claim the youth, instead he made a flower, a hyacinth, from the spilled blood.

Caring for your hyacinth plant

To get the most enjoyment from your hyacinth plants in the home, place them in the coolest location possible. To ensure the soil stays compact and supportive, do not give it much water. For outside planting they are happy in the shade or sun, just make sure the roots don't dry out. Plant food is not necessary as they contain all the nutrition they need in the bulb.

We have bouquets of blue or white hyacinths available on the webshop.

workshop, christmas

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

We are well and truly in full Christmas mode in the shop! Here's a brief update on what we're up to:

Our first festive workshop happened on Tuesday with 7 ladies creating beautiful door wreaths. There was glitter everywhere! It's always amazing to see the different designs they come up with considering they all have the same festive items to choose from. Here are some photos from the night:

This Saturday is 'Small Business Saturday' in Little Chalfont. All the independent shops are offering special deals including us. After last years success we have decided to repeat our 20% off all gifts from 9am until 5:30pm. We are fully stocked with great gifts from Parlane, Sia and Stoneglow so if you are still in need of Christmas presents here is a great incentive to pop in and get a bargain! Here are some examples of the gifts on special offer:

We also have the first of our December weddings on Saturday, they are taking full advantage of the season and have gone for warm reds, whites and lush foliage - pictures to follow shortly!

There is still time to order your door wreaths and candle arrangements which are all made from scratch in the shop. Colours range from gold, silver, green, natural and ice blue while the style can either be traditional or modern.

We hope to see or hear from you soon!

Monkey Island Wedding, November 2014

Designing these flower arrangements with Clare was so much fun. As their wedding was on November 1st it was important to bring some warmth to the day with a bold colour palette.

We hope you enjoy looking through the photos!

London Wedding Flowers

We had so much fun designing this wedding with Anna. The Bridesmaids had bouquets made purely using Alstomeria in a rich autumnal orange, while Anna's bouquet contained Avalanche roses and gold pine cones enhanced with scented berried eucalyptus.

At Oasis Church Waterloo we created two pedestal arrangements using multi coloured oak leaves and gold glittered lotus heads.

The reception, Hackney Town Hall had eight golden willow trees each with autumnal leaves and hanging pine cones.
